Bonneville Democrats Talk Voter Education, Community Service at Recent Central Committee Meeting

November 11, 2015 – Miranda Marquit –

Voter education and community service were main topics of discussion for the Central Committee Meeting of the Bonneville Democratic Party on October 20, 2015.

Educating younger voters and encouraging them to participate is an important part of raising an informed electorate. Our city, state and nation fares better when voters are engaged and knowledgeable. No matter one’s party affiliation, being aware of the issues and knowing what candidates stand for is an important part of the process.

Lynn MacAusland, a government teacher at Skyline High School was invited to share the non-‐ partisan curriculum efforts made at Skyline to help seniors learn about voting, government and how to become active. Other efforts to involve younger voters, including helping seniors register to vote and providing information at University Place, were also discussed.

Another fun way to learn about Idaho Falls politics is to join the Pizza and Politics discussions that take place regularly. Each session involves meeting for lunch and hearing from local leaders about specific issues in the community – and what individuals can do to make a difference.

Community Service Opportunities in Idaho Falls

The Bonneville Democrats have a long history of supporting community organizations that help the neediest among us. A portion of the meeting was devoted to talking about recent efforts, as well as sharing opportunities to serve.

One organization the Central Committee is involved with is Habitat for Humanity. The Committee received a report on efforts in Idaho Falls and upcoming projects.

Many of those in attendance seemed especially interested in the Backpack Program, which provides weekend nutrition for children who are on free or reduced lunch in our community schools. Food insecurity is a reality in our community: 21.6% of Idaho’s children experience this problem. Because hunger can impact the ability to learn, the Backpack Program aims to ensure that children continue receiving meals through the weekend, when they can’t be at school for breakfast and lunch.

Community efforts like Habitat for Humanity and the Backpack Program are always looking for volunteers, and Central Committee members enjoyed hearing about the efforts of one of its own, as well as learning about more ways to help throughout Idaho Falls.

The Democratic Party Central Committee holds meetings every third Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the Idaho Falls Public Library. It’s a great chance to learn more about community involvement and get educated on important issues in Idaho Falls.
